Trash talk begin:
Can the weed-wackin' KT100's stage a comeback against the venerable F200's on this course?

Hmmm...that hairpin leading onto the straight looks like a KT-killer. Matt will have to lead the whack-attack this weekend, Shummi's little brother is riding in a horse show. I really need to get him onto something with more than one horsepower, hope to have him the kid-kart when Shummi moves up to Junior Sportsman...or maybe I should put all 48 lbs of him in the KT :)

Matt, Paul,

Getting beat by the F200's just won't do. What rpm are your clutches stalling at?

Bob Beasley

I'll be there helping to defend the R1 title in Sportsman

Lindsay is talking about coming. She doesn't have the horsepower you have but... What time are you guys planning on getting there and how long are you staying?

Before the track opens until after it closes :)

Wes has told me that I will get constant ridicule if I don't step up and dust off my F200 to join the wars. I might event dig out my race helmet that alway makes me faster.

FYI - I can't make it to any more events this month. Wife's birthday this weekend, and out of town on vacation the next 2 in a row. November something-th will be the next possibility.

But, my clutch is set somewhere around 9300. Supposedly, it should be set around 10,200, but to properly set it I need to get the engine dynoed (supposedly, I set the clutch to engage just below max torque). Still learning all this, so I decided to leave it be.

Yeah, that 150* turn is going to hurt. At the last configuration, my slowest speed was in the ~120* righthander just before pit-in (BTW, the track dimensions PDF doesn't list info for that turn?). I was at 7123rpm, which is dead on 30mph. My guesstimate (from analyzing other turns and the RPMs I was able to turn in them) is that the 150* hairpin will be a 25mph turn at best, assuming some rubber gets laid down.

However, the straight is about 765' long. I can get from 30-63 in about 700'. Of course, some of that will be eaten up with braking, so I don't foresee 60+mph speeds at this event. Could be wrong, though. If I were running, I'd gear for 57mph or so.

I'm not saying Paul and Matt are skeeeeeeeeeeeeerd, I'm just pointing out they won't be there :)

Matthew Patterson
10-05-2011, 09:24 AM
Nah - I just found out all I need to know. I can almost blow my engine upon startup the day of the event. Jam the main seal back in place with a screwdriver. Get out on course not knowing where my carb is set, and not being able to see it to set it properly. And, never have driven my kart except 5 minutes up and down my neighborhood street.

Yet, still be able to pace the pack.

(Please disregard the fact that I had to push my kart back every time I went on course. That is irrelevant! ;))

Matt,

Your forgot something, you were at or close to class weight.

Matthew Patterson

Well, so were you and Paul. And Joe was underpowered (and underweight, so it canceled out). I think that weight was a wash between us.

gonna try to make it out sunday if i can get all my ducks in a row . my kart is a vtm chaissis with a 04-- 125 rotax engine on it ; i have a 12tooth sprocket on the front and was wondering what rear sprocket i should run for the design of the track sunday and if you would have that rear sprocket in stock for a 219chain. if i dont make it this weekend hope to be out there soon

See you there Carl! Garett can comment on the gearing. I'll try to get out and shoot a video of the course over the next couple of days.

I didn't see any laptimes from Ricky - maybe he had his MyChron running to get times from the beacon we had set out?

Matt,
Clutch stall is just too low. If you are going beat the tater diggers, you need to get the clutch to lock up at 10,200 or higher. Also, driving a KT100 powered kart is very different from driving a 4-cycle. In my humble opinion (I have Gulf Coast Karting Challenge 2007, and 2008, Championship trophies driving a KT100 powered Ital Corse), you should use the throttle like an on-off switch...all in or all out. Stab and release the throttle through the turns...don't half throttle it.

Carl,

I do have a few sprockets in stock waiting on a full shipment; I would start 78-80

You're exactly right with the clutch lockup. I've heard that. I just didn't really want to mess with it on my first time out. Now that I've run it, I will adjust it a bit.

However, I have a question about that. I don't know what RPM my current L&T wet clutch tops out at. But, I know that I can increase it, perhaps up to 10,000+. But, soon I believe I'll be wanting to get a dry clutch. I'll learn with the wet, but compete with the dry, so to speak.

I've been looking at the Tomar TD23-3 clutch. But, it only goes up to a 9800rm engagement. How do I get up to 10,200? Do I need something else, like the Horstman?

You tune the clutch to the pipe and flex you are running.

Matthew Patterson

OK, Mitch, got a question about that. I've read that I should tune my clutch to come in right around peak torque, right? Only way I can know that is to put it on a dyno?

So, I should get hold of a dyno, put the engine on there (with the pipe and flex I plan to use), and then I'll know where to set the clutch. Perhaps make a few pulls with different flex lengths to get reference points?

Am I thinking about this right?

AnthonyHarwin
10-06-2011, 08:21 PM
Mitch is right...the pipe and flex (and header to some degree) determine where the motor makes power. My experience with the L2 (have to dig out my old notes to see what the flex range was) was that the motor would fall on it's face (kind of a rubber band effect coming out of the hole) below 10,000 and felt best between 10,100 and 10,500. I ran DXL-2 and 3 disk as well as Steel Nytro 3-disk clutches...all wet. Early on the dry clutches would die early...probably cause we slipped em too long! Anyway, I've heard there are good dry clutches these days and my KT days are long ago, so I would defer to Mitch.

Im planning to attend this sunday with my CRF450R supermoto.. Cant wait!! -Orey..

Any body else bringing motorcycles??

carl
10-07-2011, 11:33 PM
i agree orey i think supermoto on that track will be fantastic; if you go to semra website in florida and the gamra website and post up you may be able to get a few participants out to run some laps with you; right now i dont have all my ducks in a row but i am hoping to bring my bike and my kart out there soon to have some fun; theres a supermoto community out looking for a place to ignite interest in the sport ; nola may be the place ; check out those websites ; ps-- mitch that could help yall bring in extra participation and interest in the gokart facility; i know at mpr a lot of us started out riding the supermoto bikes and still do but found out how much fun the gokarts are and it really helped out the gokart turnout; good luck to nola in the future and i know all the folks from mpr plan on supporting and enjoying yalls company and facilities in the future;
